UCLA Conversion Factor History

Conversion factors are the ratio of the average units taken by students at a given level to the full, or normative, study load for that student level. Due to the lead time required to prepare the state budget, the conversion factors that apply to a given year for budget calculations are the averages of the data for two years and three years prior. Conversion factors are capped at 1.000. For an explanation of the use of conversion factors in calculating FTE enrollment, see page 5 of the UC Enrollment Issues Handbook.

Definitions:

Lower Division: Undergraduates who have completed fewer than 90 units
Upper Division: Undergraduates who have completed 90 units or more
Graduate 1: Masters and professional graduate students, and doctoral students who have not advanced to candidacy
Graduate 2: Doctoral students who have advanced to candidacy
